Congratulations goes out to
Team Combat Evolutions Adam Sawyer
for his great victory at USFL:
Proving Grounds MMA fight last night
(July 25th, 2008)against Jeremiah
Johnson from Team Strike Zone.
Johnson, with a 6" Height advantage
was domainated on the ground by
Sawyer's patience and consistent
movement on the ground.
Being Sawyer's second fight at
Foxwoods, his poise and relaxation
in the ring almost caused him to
be knocked out as he taunted
Johnson by dropping his hands
and shaking his head.
Johnson retailiated with a brutal
1-2 combo to Sawyers head.
Unblemished by the combo,
Sawyer snapped a hard left
hook to Johnson followed by a
right inside leg kick that led
to the clench and eventually
Sawyer bringing Johnson down
again.

In the end, however, the victory
for Sawyer lie on the ground,
with constant body strikes,
submitted Johnson with a Trachea Choke,
a basic BJJ move that Johnson
couldn't handle.

Upon Johnson's tapout, Sawyer
arose to a crowd of silence,
because the submissions simplicity
remained unnoticed by fans.
As the bell rang the end of the
fight, Fans were still in awe as no one understood why Johnson remain
lying on the floor.

When the ring announcer gave
note to the submission, the
crowd applauded to Sawyers victory,
one that few can deny is a
submisson rarely seen in MMA
today. BJJ at its finest!

The philosophy behind Combat Evolution
Jiu Jitsu is very simple; the whole is
greater than the sum of its parts. For
example, a technique does not work by
itself unless combined with the concepts
of balance, power, speed, focus, timing,
and attitude.
When combining these elements,
outcome or whole is far more effective then
what would normally be the sum of the parts.
This is the reason techniques, as
practiced in systems, are only tools
used to understand, accept and retain
these ideas. The number of different
techniques mastered by an individual
does not increase his level of
competence in any given system.
Techniques are only practiced
moves until combined with the proper
fighting concepts. The ultimate goal
of the martial arts is to make your
mental, physical and technical skills
work as one. The goal of Combat Evolution
is to do this while producing a quality
fighter who can think creatively
and react responsively rather than
giving people information overload.
The name of Combat Evolution as a
system is influenced by the concept
of using power and combat reality.
Combat Evolution relied on a single
goal; survival. This goal is proving
to be a valuable asset.

The intimidation factor
of the name "Combat Evolution"
is nothing students need to defend.
However, just the goal of winning
actually proves limiting the
progression of the system and
future instructors. CEJJ has
the recipe for producing competent
fighters and is able to isolate the
individual ingredients that make up
the end product. When becoming a
student of CEJJ you will spend your
time developing training methods used
to understand the reasoning behind
the techniques and isolating the
concepts of fighting.

Present Focus

In the early stages of developing
CEJJ, the power techniques were key,
and the idea of using concepts was
secondary. As the concepts of power
hitting, blocking hard, assortments
of standing and ground tactics,
balance and attitude become more
dominant. The system as a whole,
needs a new focus.
It is very important to
feel positive and confident about
what you know.
CEJJ’s goal is to ensure that each
of the students work together. With
each one having a piece of the puzzle,
no one could claim they knew it all.
The product, CEJJ, will never fully
be complete. There will always be
that missing element that connects
and distinguishes martial arts. It
is not the techniques, since most
systems techniques are different.
It is not the ability to change from
empty hands to weapons, from standing
to ground fighting. What exactly is it?
The search for the answer will be the
driving force in the developing of CEJJ.

"Using what works" in any
given situation, is the motto of CEJJ,
however a person must understand the
various risks (not what they did) as
well as the advantages. The ideation
of CEJJ is if a student uncovered a
new technique or concept, which cuts
seconds without abandoning other
attributes, There is always permission
to incorporate it into lessons and
teachings.
As an instructor, I will never be one
to hide or refrain from teaching what
I learn or develop. There are no secrets,
nor any hidden agendas in CEJJ.
I believe that if one person holds back information, and the next person he
teaches holds back information,
eventually there will be nothing
substantial left to teach. I feel
that the idea to hold back information
has to do with an instructor’s
insecurity. As an instructor,
I will never have something to
use against the students. The
students of CEJJ will strive
for creativity, innovation and
hard work. CEJJ shall always be
in the constant state of development.
As long as students continue to learn
quality, the system will continue to
develop. It is a progressive,
challenging and adaptive system.
