UFC 118 Media Conference with BJ Penn & Frankie

August 20th, 2010

PENNYBUFFINGTON Posted:

UFC 118 is being held in Boston, Ma. Aug. 28. The main event of the night will be the rematch lightweight title fight between Frankie Edgar vs. BJ Penn. The co-main event is the light heavyweight match-up between mixed martial arts veteran Randy “The Natural” Couture and making his UFC debut boxer James “Lights Out” Toney.

The following quotes were given to Penny Buffington of MMA2DAY and others members of the press during the UFC 118 Media Conference with the current UFC lightweight title holder Frankie “The Answer” Edgar and BJ “The Prodigy’ Penn.

To hear the audio from the UFC Media conference with Randy Couture and James Toney go to: http://www.pennyjomma.com/

Frankie Edgar: I try not to even think about the title. It’s another fight, it’s another great challenge ahead of me and that’s how I approach it. So this is a totally new fight for me whether it’s a title defense or a new fight, old fight - it doesn’t matter. It’s all the same to me.

You know, easy. I mean, you know, when you’re preparing for someone like BJ, you know, right away it’s going to force you to really focus and gear up for another hard fight. And, you know, I know BJ’s a very smart fighter and he’s got a good team around him and I know he’s going to come in with a great plan to counter my last fight. So, you know, my team and I have really focused on trying to counter what he’s going to counter if we can, you know

BJ Penn: I’m not really a big guy on watching the films even if it’s a great fight that I won. I still don’t think that I did good enough. But I take a lot from the first fight from when we were in the ring. It actually is one of the fights that I kind of can remember.

Frankie actually did some things that impressed me actually and actually that I started adding to my game. I liked how he didn’t hold on to the take downs too much and just kind of broke away. And I like how he did some different things and no matter who you are in the ring with they’re always teaching you and you’re always constantly learning.

As far as watching tapes, that’s not me. I can’t sit down. I get too bored sitting there and watching tapes. But I took away from it what happened in the fight. And I remember I know how hard Frankie hits and I know how fast he is and I know the way he moves and he does well in all those areas and that’s what I’m preparing for next week.

I think there are a lot of great fights out there and I want to - I’m 31 right now and I have been with the company for 10 years and I really want to be as active as I can in this next couple years coming up in my life. So I’m glad that there are all these contenders around in the division. It’s very good. It’s a very good division.

Frankie Edgar: When I come in I think my last three or four fights I’ve been the underdog. So it’s a role I’m becoming comfortable with so I seem to perform pretty good in this position.

BJ Penn: I congratulate Frankie Edgar on a good performance and that’s pretty much - Frankie did bruise me up pretty good here and there but I didn’t have almost like a brain damage type of feeling. I was just kind of feeling sorry for myself and this and that. So I realized pretty quick what went down. loss to Frankie actually made me step back and realize that I want to fight as much as I can, you know. After the fight with Frankie, you know, God willing I have no broken hand or any broken bones or no suspension, you know, I want to, you know, fight next month, fight, you know, next week. I really, you know, I don’t know if I feel my biological clock ticking or what but I just want to get in there and I just want to fight as much as possible and just see it, you know. I’ve kind of spaced my career out actually over the ten years and I kind of want to make a push to be a true fighter, a person that fights all the time. And I think I’ve got a good training camp and I’ve kind of figured out how to keep myself healthy through multiple training camps I think I could do it and I think I could try to be very busy and very active. And, you know, I don’t want to say that it’s just all about the money but I wouldn’t mind, you know, trying to make some money.

Frankie Edgar: I think every fighter has doubts. I mean, you know, it’s just what makes - what sets you apart is how you face them and what you do to combat those doubts.

BJ Penn: You know what? You know, maybe people (say this) about me, but, you know, as far as wanting to go out there and prove that Frankie Edgar can’t beat me and get my belt back, you know, there is no lack of motivation for this fight.

You know, I want to prove to the world, I want to prove to Frankie, I want to prove to Frankie’s corner, I want to prove to my corner, I want to prove to everybody, you know, who the best fighter is in the world, who’s got the most tools, and who can execute better. And, you know, the - as far as motivation, you know, I can find something. I can find something to not like Frankie about, you know.

First of all, no one is untouchable. And if they are, they just haven’t, you know, they just haven’t run into the right guy.

You know, when you hear people say you’re the greatest lightweight of all time and this and that and this and that, it’s bullshit. It’s not real. It’s fake. You know, being the champ is fake, all of that is all fake.

You just go out there, you’ve got to keep training, keeping training as hard as you can and keep winning fights. The only thing that’s real is the fight. Everything else is fake.

Frankie Edgar: We really try not to put a face on somebody, you know. It’s a style I’m fighting. And if I can go into every fight like that, that definitely takes the mental part out of it.

Pre Fight Chael Hits Anderson Hard

It was clear to anyone who heard the UFC Media Conference with Chael Sonnen and Anderson Silva last week that Sonnen won the verbal war. If it had been a slap fest then Silva’s face would have been beat red from the slap marks Sonnen was assaulting him with.

Now let’s see what happens on Saturday, August 7 live on Pay-Per-View at 10 pm eastern, 7 pm pacific, when the Ultimate Fighting Championship is going to Oakland, California to hold the championship middleweight title fight between Anderson Silva and the number one contender Chael Sonnen.

The current title holder Anderson “The Spider” Silva is coming off a 12-fight winning streak. He has not lost a single UFC fight since his arrival in 2006 when he knocked out Chris Leben. His fight stats are: 26 - 4 – 0.

His last fight he fought Demian Maia back in April. The fight was lackluster to say the least and provoked Dana White to respond at the post fight press conference. “I don’t think I’ve been more embarrassed in the 10 years of being in this business,” said White. “It’s the first I’ve ever walked out on a main event, given the belt to the guy’s manager and told him to put it on him.”

In the past UFC fans have seen Silva dominate his opponents. Most memorable to fans and to the opponent was the first time Anderson fought Rich “Ace” Franklin where “The Spider” grabbed the back of Franklin’s neck held him in a clinch and kneed his face in literally changing the location of the bones in Franklin’s nose causing the fighter to receive surgery to fix the damage.

Sonnen’s fight stats are 24 - 10 – 1. He last fought and defeated Nate Marquardt back in Feb. at UFC 109. He also fought yet lost to Demian Maia via submission (Triangle Choke) in Feb. of 2009.

During the UFC media Conference Penny Buffington of MMA2DAY asked, “Anderson, I would like to know specifically what changes have you decided to make from your last two previous fights going into this fight with Chael?”

MMA2DAY airs on WSBR Radio 740 S. Florida or live on the internet. Info can be found at: http://pennyjomma.com/

Silva answered it was then interpreted by his manager Ed Soares. “I started training with Steven Seagal.”

Chael Sonnen: “Well Penny, you knew when you asked him a question that you were setting yourself up for a boring answer and you got one. So, what are you going to do?”

Penny Buffington, “Thank you for the interview the other day Chael.”

“You’re very welcome. This is Anderson yet again. You know, he truly believes the answer he gave a few minutes ago, that people are tuning in to see a fight and not see anything else. He really means that. He feels like he’s taking the moral high ground.

He couldn’t be more wrong. Does he know anything about business? Has this guy ever done anything? That’s not what people are tuning in to see. People don’t want to just see two people fight they want to know why they’re fighting.

He comes on here and says something stupid as though he’s saying like some Nobel Prize winning statement. He couldn’t have this industry more backwards. It’s shocking that he actually believes and then stands there with his chest out like we should all pat him on the back and go, oh, good job Anderson. You’re training really hard. Well, guess what dummy, I’ve been training really hard since I was nine years old and I still have time to bring interest to what people see in me with your ass on August 7.

Of course, I’m promoting this fight myself. And that’s the way it should be. Nobody wants to hear from Anderson anyway. I’m shocked with all of these people that come on here and ask him questions. Who cares what Anderson has to say? You guys are the only fans he’s got is the media. There’s nobody buying tickets to see this guy. There’s nobody selling merchandise because this guy is wearing it. There’s nobody tuning into a pay-per-view.

I’m the one carrying the show. And that’s the way it should be. I’m the one they want to see. I’m the one that they’re paying to see. And I really don’t even know why he’s here.”

Exclusive Interview with UFC’s Brian Stann

Exclusive Interview with UFC’s Brian Stann

Brian Stann current UFC fighter and former WEC light heavyweight title holder drops down to the middleweight class and is prepared to fight Mike Massenzio UFC Live Sun, Aug 1 on Versus. The main event of the night will be Jon Jones vs. Vladimir Matyushenko. Vladimir will be a guest on MMA2DAY for an exclusive pre-fight interview the day of the event. Details at: http://pennyjomma.com/

Stann a recent guest on MM2DAY 7/25- seems happy with his decision to drop weight. He told MMA2DAY, “This is going to be my first time. It is a more natural weight for me. I started to cut in April actually. There is a little bit of a shrinking process, just to try and get myself a little bit smaller. But my last fight at 205, I woke up and at weigh-ins I was already a half a pound under so I didn’t even have to cut any weight. This really doesn’t work well for me when most of the guy’s game plans are to take me down and hold me down. I need to be the bigger stronger guy, more difficult to take down and more difficult to hold down, so that I can go ahead and impose my will with strikes.”

Brian is well known for his former service in the military. He explained how he continues his service, “I spent 9 years in the Military; the Naval Academy and Marine Corps. Although I am not active duty now I still stay pretty involved with the military and I run a charity called Hire Heroes USA which is a nonprofit organization which helps veterans transition between workforce and finding a job.”

“We have a 3 phase program where we work with the veteran on helping them with their resume writing skills, their interviewing skills, strategic planning to find the right job, or the right employer and what they want to do. We try to help them find and job and move them on into the next phase of their life.” The website is http://www.hireheroesusa.org/

“I think it is impossible to focus 100% of my time on fighting. I think it would be a mistake if I did. No fighter does, trust me. I don’t care how hard they say they train. There are only so many hours they can actually physically train. I’d say 90% of the fighters are off playing video games most the day. Between practices they aren’t doing a lot of constructive things with their time. For me I’m just a busy body. I’m training 2, 3, 4 times a day and between those sessions I’m running this organization and doing other things. My mind needs to be occupied and it’s a good thing for me to have that relief and to have something else besides fighting because I think when a fighter only has that it actually becomes too stressful for him. They over think the fight and they fight a little bit more stiff then they should.”

Brian “All American” Stann says well known coach from Jacksons MMA in Albuquerque, New Mexico has no worries when it comes to training him. “My coach Greg Jackson always laughs about, I am the last guy he has to worry about being late to practice, or not showing up for a workout. His main concern with me is usually that I am going to do too much. I think that the Marine Corps certainly gave me a lot of skills and a lot of things that I will carry over into every facet of my life.”

Brian does not seem too concerned with Mike Massenzio 11 - 3 – 0 fight stats. “I’ve been able to watch all the footage I could get on him. It’s pretty much the same style on every fight. He is a world class wrestler. He uses those skills. He likes to get on top of guys and beat them up a little bit. Maybe, an occasional arm lock here or there. But it’s going to be his ability to take me down, my ability to stop the takedown, my ability to work from my back and get up, my ability to reverse position and get top control.”

MMA2DAY airs Sunday night’s 7-9 pm eastern time on WSBR Radio 740 S. Florida or live on the internet. Info at: http://pennyjomma.com/

Jon Jones and Vladimir Matyushenko both feeling confident pre fight

July 22nd, 2010

PENNYBUFFINGTON Posted:

39 year old veteran mixed martial arts fighter Vladimir Matyushenko will fight the young fast rising MMA star Jon Jones live on Versus, Aug 1st. UFC Live, the main event.

Jones is a resident of NY State where mixed martial arts competition is illegal. Good thing for him the fight is slated to take place in San Diego, California. The 23 year old will be going into the fight with a record of 10 wins and 1 loss. Ironically the 1 loss was to another NY mixed martial arts UFC fighter, Matt Hamill.

During the UFC media conference on July 22 Jones told Penny Buffington of MMA2DAY and other members of the press how he hopes one day mixed martial arts competitions will be legalized in his home state. “What I do is prepare myself to be respectful at all times. I try to respect everyone and try to show to the everyday person that you run into that yes I am that UFC Fighter guy; but you don’t hear me swearing , you don’t hear me doing crazy things, you will never ever catch me in a bar fight. I try to carry myself like a martial artist and show people this is a beautiful art form; that this is something that we should take pride in. As a UFC fighter we should stand out in a crowd, almost like a monk would or a Knight would or any warrior throughout history. Warriors in history where not punks! They were honorable and respectful men and that is what I try to do and New Yorkers will get the hint that this is a beautiful thing; that it helps high schools, with kids self esteem and everything.”

Both men are feeling confident going into the fight Jon explained, “I’m really big on confidence. I think believing in yourself is very key. I feel as if I should be the underdog in this fight and I just believe in myself that I can beat a guy with a 24 and 4 record. That is a very impressive record. Yeah this guy is not flashy or exciting or dynamic but with 24 wins; you know how to win a fight and I see that. So I just believe in myself and I’m training to the point where I feel as if I deserve to win. When I’m sitting up there and I’ve experienced it, I want to know I’ve done everything right and I’ve trained hard. I’ve stuck through it and I’ve just trained to the point where you have got no choice but to be confident.”

Vladimir said, “With any fight you should have confidence or you shouldn’t be fighting that’s for sure but the concern is there always. It’s not nervousness, but you have to be cautious of certain things. You don’t want to do anything stupid in the fight, but there is definitely confidence there.”

Matyushenko will have much more to say during his pre fight interview with MMA2DAY airing the day of the event. Go to PennyJoMMA.com for details. http://pennyjomma.com/
