Submissions reigned supreme. Both main events ended in them, as did a fair number of the undercard fights.
As predicted (see my comment to phatdragon's Lesnar blog), Frank Mir submitted Brock Lesnar in the first round. Lesnar came out like the machine that he is, taking Mir down and unloading some rapid ground and pound. But, Mir's guard proved too dangerous. After a few armbar attempts, Mir caught the leg of standing Lesnar and didn't let go. Kneebar forced Lesnar to tap out. As I said, this was not the best match-up for UFC new big star (for Lesnar, that is), but I am looking forward to seeing more of Lesnar in the future. He is simply a monster. Great job by Mir, and a likely rematch with Tim Sylvia looms.
Sylvia, in his turn, started off even better, putting Noguera on his back with a great right. First round was all Sylvia, while Noguera, never tiring, evened things out in the second. Third round started with Sylvia looking strong, but Noguiera was able to pull guard, sweep Sylvia, and that's all she wrote. Within seconds, Sylvia was forced to tap out due to a nasty guilliotine. Noguira seems to enjoy being nearly knocked in the first round, as that's what happened in his last 2 fights now, both of which he won. Regardless, his place among the best heavyweights is undisputed, and he is now the only man to hold both Pride and UFC heavyweight titles.
Rest of the night was entertaining as well (see results posted in the news). Tim Boetsch was very impressive in his debut (on 10 days notice!) against David Heath. Ricardo Almeida's return to the UFC, as well as Chris Lytle's performance should earn both main card fights next time around.
