There are rumors already circulating (and at least one news report, from the the Wrestling Observer) that Sean Sherk has been stripped of his UFC lightweight title due to his suspension being upheld (although reduced) by California State Athletic Commission. Sherk was suspended after testing positive for a steroid substance called Nandralone after his title defense against Hermes Franca. Should he lose his title?
Some may argue that Sherk should serve out his suspension (which, at the reduced 6 months, is almost over) and return to the Octagon to defend his title. The idea is that his punishment has been determined and should not be increased. There is also Sherk's continuing denial that he used any steroids and that it was his body's natural production of the substance that caused the positive result.
I disagree with that position. I am no expert in Nandrolone, biochemistry or controlled substance rules. I am simply a fan of the sport, and my view is simple. CSAC are supposed to be the experts, and they have determined that Sherk violated the rules. Although we are not dealing with world famous records here, we have all seen what a loose steroid policy can do to a sport. As I look back on the unending baseball problems of the past several years and the lasting blemish that they have left on that sport, I can't help but wonder what a more rigorous testing program and a no-tolerance approach from MLB early on could have done. With that in mind, UFC fortunately already has a rigorous testing program. And they now have a chance to add a no-tolerance approach. Strip Sherk of his title.
If Sherk did not use Nandralone, I feel for him, but that is a reason to improve the testing and/or the CSAC procedures. UFC cannot rely on anything but the official process currently in place. And the current official process has produced an official result, and UFC should step in and nip this problem in the bud.
