He holds notable wins over former UFC champions Frank Shamrock, Pat Miletich, Oleg Taktarov, Carlos Newton and Maurice Smith
Renzo has never been one to step down from a challenge and today is training hard for the future challenges that await him. From his early days as a pro surfer to today as a top MMA fighter, Renzo has been regarded as one of the most humble yet fierce competitors in the circuit. He is constantly challenging himself and those that make up Team Renzo Gracie, from the beginner student to the one’s who have stepped into the ring to become champions.

Gracie has competed both in sport BJJ and mixed martial arts events such as the PRIDE Fighting Championships, the International Fight League, RINGS, Martial Arts Reality Superfighting (MARS), and the World Combat Championship.

Renzo is now making his mark as a coach and instructor after a celebrated career as a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu champion and innovator. As a competitor, the New Jersey resident made his biggest mark in his native Brazil, winning the jiu-jitsu Brazilian titles in 1994 and 1995 and then the world combat championship in 1995. He moved on to compete and win three times in the PRIDE Fighting championships, and posted a pair of ADC titles in 1999 and 2001. He is also a two-time winner of the world submission grappling championship (held annually in Abu Dhabi).

The Renzo Gracie Academy (located in Midtown Manhattan) is a central hub for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu training. Renzo Gracie, the main instructor, is known worldwide as a legend in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Mixed Martial Arts competition. On the mats of the academy, students of all levels learn the art of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu under the tutelage of Renzo, himself. This style has been proven among the most effective in fighting competitions (such as Ultimate Fighting Championships) as well as in the street, and Renzo is widely recognized as one of the best within the style.
Renzo personally teaches many of the classes at the academy, including all of the Advanced classes. He is well known for providing personal feedback and instruction to all students. Other classes are taught by his top students, many of whom are themselves top competitors in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Mixed-Martial Arts competitions such as Mundials, UFC, Pride, and King of the Cage. Techniques are taught both with the gi (the traditional uniform used in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu) and without the gi (wearing shorts/sweats and t-shirt or submission wrestling-style clothing). Beginner classes are for those with little or no experience, and focus on basic takedowns and sweeps, positions, and submissions (joint-locks and chokeholds). Advanced classes present more complex techniques and combinations. Drilling technique as well as live training with a partner is a part of all classes. Men and women are welcome -- some of the women who train at Renzo's are also top competitors!
One of the most amazing things about training at the Renzo Gracie Academy is that once you are there you are part of a huge family. The closeness of the students and the camaraderie cannot be rivaled. Team Renzo has consistently placed at the top of all competitions that they enter and are the current NAGA East Coast Champions as well as the Top Team at the Grappler's Quest. It is here that you will learn to be a champion too.
