Jiu Jitsu - The Gentle Art

Jiu Jitsu utilizes principles of physics and the knowledge of human anatomy to overcome an attacker with as little effort possible. Using leverage and balance to his/her advantage, the practitioner achieves maximum effect with minimum effort. The practitioner of Jiu Jitsu has a large array of techniques available to him or her, including strikes, joint locks, throws, submission holds, pins, and pressure points in order to deal with and control any situation which may arise.

Safety, Confidence, Unlimited Power

In the modern world, Jiu Jitsu is useful for practical and effective self-defense, rape prevention, and mental and physical well being. Size and flexibility are not important factors in achieving proficiency in this art since Jiu Jitsu does not rely on brute strength. Jiu Jitsu helps develop a strong spirit that makes one a true martial artist. An individual with strong spirit will have the insight to unify mind and body and the determination to succeed in life.

What Style is American Jiu Jitsu?

The American Jiu Jitsu style was started by O'Sensei Joe Puleio. O'Sensei Puleio is a certified Shichi dan (7th Degree) instructor in Hakko-Ryu Jiu-Jitsu, Kobe Jiu-Jitsu, and has studied Daito-Ryu Jiu-Jitsu. He has received Godan Rank directly under Grand Master Shoto Tanemura in Kokusai Jiu-Jitsu Remnei. In addition, he has received rank directly under Grand Master Lanada in the art of Philippine Knife and Stick fighting.

With this as its backbone, the American Jiu Jitsu style is primarily Stand-Up Jiu Jitsu with a strong emphasis on ground defense. In addition, defense from stick/club and knife attacks are part of the curriculum at all American Jiu Jitsu affiliated schools. Though this art focuses on teaching the most practical self defense from any punch, grab, or attack that one might encounter on the streets, its main goal is to help students realize that the best self defense is the ability to defuse and walk away from an unnecessary confrontation.

The instruction at New York Jiu Jitsu is composed of talented individuals, each bringing with them their own spirit for the art. There is a total of 113 years of experience among the instructors at New York Jiu Jitsu.

Sensei Jason McCarthy is the Head Instructor. Other instructors include: Sensei Tony Avila, Sensei Glenn Genovas, Sensei Felix Dashevsky, Sensei Andrew Frazer, Sensei Francine Salamone, Sempai Aaron Milam (BJJ), Sempai Mike Vander Putten, Sempai Ryan Clarke, Sempai Paul Gold-Pond, Sempai Kevin Dowling, Sempai Alison Chen, Sempai Michelle Zeitler, Sempai Kimball Feeley, Sempai André Branch, Sempai Christian DeLature and Sempai Rodrigo Curbelo.

We are here to serve any student who has a genuine interest in improving his or her strengths as a martial artist and as a person.

- Our first goal is to provide a safe, clean, and enjoyable learning environment.

- Our second goal is to teach effective self-defense techniques that truly rely on skill as opposed to physical strength.

- Our third goal is to foster a community in which current and future students of our school feel supported in their personal development.

- Our fourth goal is to support the wider community through education and outreach activities.

We constantly strive to provide the means of improvement for ourselves and our students, including seminars, special training, and first aid and safety instruction.

As martial artists, we keep open minds and encourage thoughtful discussion and respect among all members of our school and community. We welcome all serious students regardless of age, gender, style, heritage, race, or rank.
