I won first place at the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Pan American games in 1999. I won third place at the 1999 World Championships in Brazil as a brown belt. Continuing on my Martial Arts career, I competed in the ADCC Submission Wrestling World Championship. With these credentials, I soon began to compete in the UFC organization where he currently holds a record of nine wins and four losses.
I later became a participant in The Ultimate Fighter 4: The Comeback on Spike TV. On the show, I defeated Pete Spratt and Shonie Carter to reach the finals. On November 11, 2006, I defeated Chris Lytle by split decision to become the Ultimate Fighter 4 Welterweight Tournament Champion. My win earned him a guaranteed title shot against Georges St. Pierre for the UFC Welterweight Championship, as well as a $100,000 contract and $100,000 sponsorship with Xyience.
I challenged St. Pierre on April 7, 2007, and won the UFC Welterweight title via TKO at 3:25 of the first round.
I was interested in martial arts at an early age watching Bruce Lee movies as a kid. I began to practice in the Martial Arts(Kung Fu). I thought I could hang with just about anybody in a real fight until my father showed him a tape of a family of fighters from Brazil in real fights, beating their opponents with ease, using chokes and submissions. After seeing that tape I was determined to learn from this family, even if it meant going to Brazil. Fate would have it that Brazil would come to him when Renzo Gracie moved to New York and starting teaching in the mid 90's.
I am a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practitioner and mixed martial artist. I am the current UFC Welterweight Champion.
I coached season 6 of The Ultimate Fighter reality show with Matt Hughes. My Team (Team Serra) finished 6-2 in the first round of fights, winning six consecutive times and gave me the right to pick the fights in the second round.
My brother Nick and I, run two Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu schools at local strip malls in East Meadow, New York and Huntington, New York.
I have been training under Renzo May 23, 2000 he was awarded his black belt from Renzo making him the 1st American black belt under Renzo Gracie.
