My training spans over four decades and it is a long interesting path. If you want more information you can log onto my website at www.Lininja.com.
If not then just to sum it all up - I am a career martial artist and began my training at 3.5 years old. My mother a seamstress and father a Nassau County Policeman decided I should be involved in martial arts. Their decision was impacted by my cousin who was a martial artist and very reputable teacher in the 60’s and 70’s when it was hard core in every sense of the word. I began training in Jerome Mackey the first of the martial arts franchises and trained in many systems, one of the more reputable being Sayoc Fighting Systems with Tuhon Chris Sayoc. I then began Ninjutsu with Shihan Felix Vazquez of the Circle of One Systems and trained with him for over a decade leading me to my travels to Japan. I lived in Japan for months at a time in the last 15 years I was there 15 times. I trained directly under Soke Tanemura the Head of Genbukan Bugei and was one of his highest ranking students in the U.S. under him, holding a 5th dan in Ninpo and Ju Jutsu.
We ended up parting ways, simply due to political reasons, financial obligations and to be honest, he wanted me to teach only his systems. I have trained extensively with many other teachers and I did not want to eliminate that part of my past. He also was never happy with my friendships and associations with people who were in the Bujinkan and Genikan as wells as the Way of the Winds systems. This too me was hard to handle. I am a open and friendly person with many friends in many styles. I didn’t want to lose those relationships.
Another reason many people do not know is I had three friends leave the Genbukan Organization who were also very high ranking instructors. When they left I was told not to talk to them and be their friends and break all ties. Some may see this as a reasonable thing to ask. Loyalty is to your teacher, but I didn't - Over the last 15 years I developed a brotherhood with them and couldn't just let that go. After all we traveled and taught throughout the world together, how could I give that up. I also thought long and hard and for almost a year, it tortured me. Who do I chose, my friends and brothers, or my teacher. I didn’t want to be put in this situation - I realized the lessons I taught to my students were empty if I was too do that. I am now considered a bad person and disloyal to the organization and I too am not to be spoken to. I accept this.
I had to practice what I preach and say no. I tried hard to explain to the Grandmaster, but he had no interest in listening to me. I decided Loyalty - Giri was a two way street. I made the decision to hold firm and hope for the best, in the end he said it is his way or the highway. I was presented with the highway and now I travel the world on that very road calling what I do 21st Century Ninjutsu – the adaptation of all I have learned in my 39 years of martial arts – to me it is all Ninjutsu and I am proud to continue to teach my students.
Soke will always be someone who touched my life, like many other teachers. Ever since I opened my school I swore allegiance to my students and the L.I. Ninjutsu Centers organization. I need to worry about my students first. This was a factor when it came to my limitation with other instructors.
When it comes to the teachers that I have spent time with and trained with - either in seminars or on a regular basis the list is endless. To name a few it would be Steven Seagal - Take Shihan, Professor Wally Jay, Professor Ronald Duncan, Shihan Felix Vazquez, John Olshlagers - soke, Willy Cahill, Wow........ the list is endless.
Here is a video that represents in a funny way, how talk is cheap. Many people on the internet have a great deal to say, they will discredit others, they will make comparisons, say - your ninjutsu is fake or you are a sell out, without even knowing who you are. I saw this video and laughed hysterically - even though it is funny, the reality of talk is cheap is really a big deal in the martial arts.
I believe longevity is the true base of character, someone who has lived many generations and adapted to the times, run a reputable school and helped thousands of students enhance their lives are the real heroes. In any event, I do what I do for the students who train - for those that quit; I hope the lessons continue to stick with them, no matter how long they have trained with me.
Here is a great Parody of the U.F.C. Enjoy..
